I have attended and presented papers at several national and regional association meetings over the past several years, most recently the Southern Sociological Society meeting in April 2008, and the American Sociological Association Meeting in August 2008. I am an alumni member of the ASA Honors Program, and have presented workshops on Teaching Sociology at national meetings. In 1998, I was chosen to participate in the VCCS Instructional Leader'seminar. In 2004, I was selected into the JSRCC Faculty Development Academy and in 2005 I won JSRCC's Learning Environment Award.
While teaching at Angelina College in Texas, I was recognized by faculty and students for teaching excellence and was chosen to attend the "Texas Teacher Roundup." The "Roundup" was a week-long, national seminar recognizing teaching effectiveness and providing opportunity for professional development with educators from around the country. It was a memorable week at a dude ranch outside of San Antonio! After returning to Virginia in 1991, I taught part-time at area institutions (University of Mary Washington College, Germanna Community College, and Lord Fairfax Community College) before beginning here at JSRCC.
I received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sociology and English from Texas A&M University in Commerce, TX. I am currently finishing work on my Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Virginia. I have completed all coursework and comprehensive exams and successfully defended by dissertation proposal in the fall of 2007. I am in the process of finishing writing my final dissertation and hope to defend it and earn my doctorate by the end of the fall 2008 semester.
And on a personal note...
I am married to a wonderful man, Steve, and we are raising our "furry kids"...a large and lovable 2-year-old Pyrenees/ Shepherd mix, named Brady, and a elderly, 17-yeard-old, cat named Riley. The little girl with me in the picture at the top is my niece, Gabriella (one of two nieces and four nephews).
