Faculty Page for Prof. Joseph Appiah

Dr. Appiah earned his B.A. degree with honors in 1979 at the University of Ghana,
Legon, majoring in Geography with a minor in Political Science. He earned his first
Master's degree in African/Afro-American Studies at the State University of New York
(SUNY) at Albany, New York, in 1984, before earning his M. A. in Geography at SUNY-Albany
in 1989, the same year he completed a Doctor of Arts degree in Humanistic Studies,
majoring in History, at SUNY-Albany.
Dr. Appiah taught high school geography in Ghana during 1979-80 and high school
geography and government in Nigeria from 1980 to 1983. In the USA, Dr. Appiah taught
Western Civilization and American History at Horry Georgetown Technical College in Conway,
South Carolina, from 1990 to 1993, as well as teaching Western Civilization and African
American History at the Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach from 1991 to 1993 as
an adjunct professor of history. He started at J. Sargeant Reynolds in August, 1993,
teaching Western Civilization, World History, and African-American History.
His main research interest centers on the European presence in Africa and how this
presence has influenced the modernization process in Africa.
Prof. Appiah is listed in Who's Who in American Colleges, 1996. He holds
honorary membership in Phi Theta Kappa, the international honorary organization for
two-year colleges, and he has won the Horizon Award of Phi Theta Kappa, an awared
presented to outstanding advisors of local chapters of the organization.
